The set's big mechanic

Empower Jace

Empower Jace N puts N loyalty counters on your Jace token. No token yet? You create one first.

The token is a blue planeswalker with two abilities:

  • −1: Surveil 1
  • −3: Draw a card

It has no plus ability. More empower is the only way to refill it. You build up one token, not several.

Mindseeker Oculus
Mindseeker Oculus: makes a Jace with 4 loyalty

How the Jace token works

  • One ability per turn, in your main phase. Adding loyalty doesn't give you a second use.
  • You can use it the turn it's made.
  • It's a planeswalker, not a creature. It can't block, and opponents can attack it. Each point of damage removes a loyalty counter.
  • At 0 loyalty it's gone. If you spend the last counters on an ability, the ability still happens.
  • Empower can't add loyalty to a real Jace card, only the token.
  • Behold a Jace: point to a Jace you control or reveal one from your hand. Nothing gets sacrificed.

Countersculpt
Countersculpt: costs 1 less if you behold a Jace, then empowers Jace 1

Prepare

Some creatures carry a small spell. When the creature is prepared, you can pay that spell's cost and cast it once.

  • The creature stays on the battlefield and becomes unprepared.
  • Most prepared spells are sorceries. Only two in the set are instants.
  • If the creature leaves before you cast it, the spell is gone.
  • You can't cast the small spell from your hand.

Also in the set

HeartwoodAn artifact token that taps for red or green mana, every turn. You don't sacrifice it, and it can tap right away.
Surveil & scryLook at the top cards. Surveil puts any of them in your graveyard, scry puts them on the bottom. Neither one draws.
ThresholdTurns on with seven or more cards in your own graveyard. Tokens don't count.

Echoed pairs

Each Play Booster has three borderless legends from a bonus sheet: two that form an echoed pair and one unpaired legend.

A pair is two versions of the same character, one from each reality. They're two separate cards. Taking one doesn't mean you need the other, and they might not fit the same deck.
